SPIN Chennai celebrates the Pearl jubilee-30years of excellence & innovation with organising a premier conference on AI

Chennai, India, June 2025: SPICON 2025an initiative by SPIN Chennai (www.spinchennai.org) marked a culmination of Knowledge base industry people across industries.

Software Process Improvement Network (a.k.a) SPIN Chennai (not for profit entity) is one of the 100+ SPINs in the world is now a 30-year-old knowledge network out of Chennai, affiliated to Carnegie Mellon University’s Software Engineering Institute. SPIN Chennai instituted Watts Humphrey awards in memory of the world-famous quality guru Dr. Watts Humphrey (hailed as the father of software quality across the world) for contributions that generate value for customers through implementation of practices including Agile, DevOps, Automation, Design Thinking, Lean, Six sigma, CMMI 2.0, High Maturity Processes, AI-ML, Innovation etc. 

President of SPIN Chennai, Dr. Rajaram Venkataraman during his welcome address spoke about the road travelled by SPIN Chennai during the last 30 years with each decade’s focus being different and how spin chennai has led the industry from the front and provided leading edge leadership. He also talked about the importance that SPIN chennai is placing on trends like AI with specific focus on Gen AI, agentic AI, SLM (small language model) and Deep tech for the current decade including the next 5 years or so.

Mr. Rajamanickam, Chair of program committee elaborated on the theme and structure of the conference.

Special Address by Guest of Honour, Dr. Sivaramakrishnan R Guruvayur, Chief AI

Scientist, Aquarians ai, Dubai & Research Advisor with Centrefor Responsible AI (CeRAI), IIT Madras spoke about coining to current Responsible AI, Ethics in AI, closed and open models andits bias. He spoke about the strategy to null the kill.

Inaugural Keynote Address by Chief Guest, Dr. Srikanth Sundararajan, General Partner,

Ventureast and Advisor to T-Hub, Hyderabad spoke on Leveraging AI for software productivity and highlights on product strategy and customer insights and on SLM. He touched upon the hallucinating algorithms and trust issues on Gen AI especially on fabricated legal clauses and medical prescriptions.

Dr. L.N. Rajaram, one of the core members of the founding team of Spin chennai, made a special announcement about the launch of the Formation of Deep Tech Forum, a Special Interest Group at SPIN Chennai. He addressed the need for such a forum specifically for a country like India, who houses 30,000 Deep Tech companies. 

Panel Session 1 “Technologies for Generative AI”

Mr. Ramesh Krishnamurthy, chair of the plenary 1 on technologies involved in Gen AI said that technology is rapidly changing with an evolving paradigm and brings new order of value every time.

Mr. Madhan Karthikeyan Anbalagan, Senior Principal, Infosys

Spoke about autonomous agents, AI on top of legacy software and acts as an interface between software. Insights on Actionable Agentic ai for future and Humans will review on the actions of Agents. (No out of box agents, Context data matters, Reliability, Evaluation and said there need not be UIfor agentic AI), and said world is moving towards Test driven development at real time Environment. AI will assist Human’s in Gen ai era whereas humans will be assistant to agents in agentic era. Also touched upon Agent-to-agent protocol and searching agents.

Dr LN Rajaram spoke about video Analytics and phygital technologies where videos from sensors like cameras about 1.5 million in India’s transport solutions to increase the range of coverage through multiple cameras located at Parking facilities, crowded area. Pretrained object modules and curated by filters through sequence analysis can provide solutions using the features of the products are compute intensive with complex models. Particularly solutions for Railways (alerting track workers, accident avoidance) and in Warehouse. AI Learning to differentiate between normal and abnormal live environments. Agentic ai will detection and translation into actions or alerts. He predicted Humans can’t be invisible in space which may become illegal in future butwill be watched over all time in spite of privacy policies.

Ms. Gayathri Devi Jayan, India Chapter President, Applied AI Association.

Made the moment lighter with AI in Process & quality. She connected the dots from development, design to deliver inproject management. She insisted on the importance of data as experiential knowledge that ends up to right data which humans have it as experience. Traditional vs Augmented AI across SDLC this Generation are pioneers and need to educatethe next gen on the effectiveness and harmfulness of Trust and networking factors and also about the irreplaceable Human intelligence. HE insisted to Track the Crooks in agents through regulators.

SPICON Continued with energy as a Demo by Ezee.ai on process automation using AI across SDLC in dynamic market environments.

Post Lunch panel session:  Applications of Gen AI in core Industries

      Mr. Sathish, Partner, KPMG, Chaired the Panel, spoke on Intelligent operations – adding on value through AI driven transformation, shed info on survey statistic in AI at a glance. set the stage on Digital and sustainable twins on Investment perspectives. He said AI not in conversation but in actions also spoke on Autonomous production, Asset management strategy for supply chains. Embed, enable, evolve on AI implementations atspinning gen ai.

Dr Ramakrishnan Srinivasan, CEO of IIT Madras Mobility and Intelligent Transportation Collaborative (MInT), Professor of Practice, Department of Data Sciences & AI.

Explained the Evolution of AI in mobility, Digital technologies impact as we create products in the new world era. (HAL &. AI space Odessey). Understanding emotions than from NLP to make decisions for computers to decide like humans in Automation & creativity, Automotive Product innovations. He spoke on quality control in Realtime automotive data and UX Virtual dealership. Mobility ecosystem innovations and invited volunteers for Mint collaboration for Mobility digital infra and Food for thought in world of gen AI  to transform the world.

AN Srinivasan, Vice President & Head of Oracle Services, SRF Limited.

He remarked that AI can’t run automation at scales, IOT playsa critical role. Penetration of AI is so high that makes less human intervention, with digital twins help in analysis of Realtime shop floor data. HE spoke on Gen AI workingcapital and asked to look at AI implementation only if it is inline with ROI and capable of incorporating large data and interactable with Legacy & scale up.

Mr. A. Chandrasekaran, Director, Golden Planet Senior Heritage Homes Pvt., Ltd. 

     Easy way to explain AI to elders is “computers taught us in earlier era and today we teach computers”. Also explained 5-fold aspirations of elders with golden planet 1000 dwellings aspiring to build Golden community by 2030 to hold most of Indian elders and also to bring up a knowledge hub helping elders to earn even in their aging period. He also spoke about AI tools in construction project management and how ChatGPT improved the EBITA Margin. He ended with a note “Follow AI else it might follow you”.

Plenary session 3: Application of Gen AI in Service Industries (BFSI, Healthcare, EdTech, FinTech)

Dinesh, the Session Chair for Plenary 3 said that in the service industry, Gen AI brings huge competitive advantage and provides the edge.

Mr. Rajendra Awasthi, (FinTech) Founder and CEO, Ezee.aispoke about the “Implementation of Gen AI in FinTech industry”He remarked that with mobile solutions being accelerated, Lastmile reach is possible if medium is available, where Gen AI will move unbanked population to banking population, it willempower credit unworthy people to be credit worthy enabling them to improve their livelihood. He also spoke about instant gratification and cyberthreats.

Mr. Deepak Dastrala, (BSFI) CTO Intellect AI, Intellect Design Arena.

“Implementation of Gen AI in BFSI industry”

Showed how Correlated data to get insights from augmenting models and allow humans to make decisions, especially in under writing to be scalable, value addition in optimising 40% spend on operations in BFSI. Also get to know new terms with False perspective challenges and data strategy democratisation.

Mr. Madhusudhanan (Healthcare) – Director, Vyuhaa Med Data “Implementation of Gen AI in

Healthcare industry” asked an important question, what gen ai can’t do for us? He went through the use case on X rays and ultra sonics and histopathology. Additionally challenges in Gen AIimplementation and regulatory hurdles.

Mr. Venkat Ramaswamy – (Learning and Development), Former Global Learning Facilitator &

Sales Coach, IBM “Implementation of Gen AI in EdTechindustry” spoke on OTT of edtech, regulated government bodies, corporate educators. How Gen AI is prominent in content creation and hyper personalisation accelerating the L&D.

Plenary session 4: AI Management System and Case Study(ISO 42001 – Certification)

Plenary Chair: Dr Sankaran Venkataramani, Partner, KPMG (SPIN Steering Committee Member) set the stage about intent, process reliability, outcome of Gen AI.

Mr. Sekar Thanigaimani, Lead Auditor, ISO 42001, Intertek themed “Overview of ISO 42001 standard for AI Certification”

     Spoke on ISO 42001 framework said that the control themes enforce organisations that enable its services to be reliable, unbiased, traceable and transparent. He further noted about AI risk and impact, AI Governance operating model plus Key audit focus areas & emerging trends in AI Audit. 

Mr. Dharmendraraj G N, Vice President, Delivery Excellence, Cognizant delivered a deck on “ISO 42001 implementation experience” Certification Journey in cognizant and how they trained employees across organisation on domain centric gen ai solutions. How regulatory needs can be customised as per Geo regions. Also spoke on Life cycle critical practices to be trustworthy and ethical, Metrics on model evolution and assessment framework and its impact. Solutioning & contracting and delivery execution.

Mr. KR Jayakumar, CEO, Amitysoft Technologies Pvt Ltd. touched upon “Tools for ISO 42001 implementation” -Automated Tools budget and the 5 AI factors, as manual AIgovernance is cumbersome. Also spoke on Tools supporting LLM vs traditional ML models. He explained a case study on loan approval and how eliminating bias using algorithms. He concluded with LLM metrics and Confusion matrix.

Few questions from audience on AI COE’s freedom and responsible AI were answered and a raffle and memento distribution happened to encourage participants through a lucky contest and LinkedIn contest respectively.
