The SRM College of Pharmacy, SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), commemorated World Pharmacists Day 2025 at the Dr. T.P. Ganesan Auditorium. This year’s global theme, “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” echoed throughout the event, spotlighting the indispensable role pharmacists play in advancing patient health and ensuring accessible, quality care.
The celebration began with a traditional invocation and the lighting of the Kuthuvilakku, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge. Adding to the celebratory spirit was the acknowledgement of SRMIST’s College of Pharmacygetting ranked 10th nationally in the NIRF 2025 rankings, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to excellence in healthcare education across disciplines.
Welcoming the gathering, Dr. V. Chitra, Dean, SRM College of Pharmacy, greeted dignitaries, faculty, students, and guests and emphasized the need to recognize pharmacists as vital contributors to healthcare delivery and innovation.
Delivering the presidential address, Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Medical and Health Sciences, SRMIST, reflected on the evolving role of pharmacists in the age of personalized medicine and biotechnology. “Pharmacists today are not merely dispensers of drugs but custodians of health and safety,” he said. “Their contributions to research, clinical practice, and community service continue to transform healthcare systems worldwide.”
Dr. T. Mythili, Additional Registrar (MSL), SRMIST, delivered the special address, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to nurturing pharmacy professionals who embody innovation, ethics, and responsibility. “Stepping up in pharmacy is not just about filling a role, it’s about advancing the profession and inspiring the next generation,” she noted.
The Chief Guest, Mr. MD. Varadarajan, Managing Director & CEO, KNISS Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, offered valuable insights into the pharmaceutical industry’s future, encouraging students to embrace emerging opportunities with curiosity and purpose.
Dr. Nagarkar also celebrated the College of Pharmacy’s recent national recognition, proudly sharing, “Being ranked among the top ten in the NIRF rankings is a milestone and a reminder that we must keep pushing boundaries.” He emphasized the role of students in shaping the future of the field: “They are the torchbearers. Their research, publications, and innovations will define tomorrow’s leaders.”
The session also highlighted the evolving role of pharmacists in healthcare. “Pharmacists are essential members of the care team,” Dr. Nagarkar said. “They ensure safety, precision, and better outcomes for patients.” Dr. Mythili added that real-world exposure is key: “Direct interactions with industry leaders give our students the insights they need to innovate and grow.”
Another highlight of the event was the Prize Distribution Ceremony, where faculty and students were honoured for their excellence in academics, research, and extracurricular achievements. Dr. K.S. Lakshmi (Admissions) administered the Pharmacist’s Oath to all faculty members, research scholars, and students, reaffirming their ethical responsibility and professional commitment.
The program concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks by Dr. N. Damodharan, Vice Principal, SRM College of Pharmacy, followed by the National Anthem. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and served as a powerful reminder of SRMIST’s dedication to advancing pharmaceutical education, research, and healthcare service.
From tradition to innovation, the celebration captured the spirit of World Pharmacists Day honoring those who safeguard health and shape the future of medicine.
