CHENNAI, India, Dec 14, 2025
A California-based nonprofit advocacy group has announced a proposal to nominate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, citing what it describes as his leadership in diplomacy, climate action, digital inclusion and inclusive development.
The proposal was announced on Friday by the Declaration of Consciousness Movement (DOCM) during a press conference in the southern Indian city of Chennai.
DOCM said the proposed nomination reflects its view that Modi’s governance aligns with principles of what the organisation calls consciousness-based leadership, a framework that emphasises ethical governance, compassion, unity and collective wellbeing.
Founded by Adhipen Bose Nandhiji, a proponent of values-based leadership and social transformation, DOCM describes itself as a global nonprofit working to integrate ethical principles into governance, education and civic life. Nandhiji has developed initiatives that combine traditional contemplative practices with modern behavioural and social research, according to the organisation.
DOCM said it also plans to advocate for the establishment of a World Consciousness Day, a proposed international observance inspired by India’s philosophical and spiritual traditions. The group said the initiative builds on existing global observances such as World Yoga Day and the increasing international recognition of Maha Shivratri.
The organisation outlined nine guiding principles it says form the foundation of an ethical global society, including nonviolence, equality, freedom, women’s and children’s rights, respect for elders, environmental responsibility, ethical institutions and unity beyond cultural and ideological divisions.
DOCM said it operates through four international programmes focused on peace dialogue, education and cultural transformation, consciousness research, and planetary awareness. The group said it aims to promote national adoption of its declaration in India and ultimately seek its consideration as a resolution at the United Nations.
Nobel Peace Prize nominations can be submitted by qualified individuals and organisations, including academics, former laureates and certain institutions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not publicly confirm nominees.
In a statement, DOCM said global challenges such as climate change, social polarisation and geopolitical tensions require new approaches to peace and governance that emphasise awareness, cooperation and ethical leadership.
