Born in 1941, Amitabh Sengupta’s career spans over six decades, during which he has gained global recognition for his abstract works that draw from both European modernism and his cross-cultural experiences. After studying at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1966 to 1971, Sengupta exhibited widely in Paris throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His work from this period reflects his deep engagement with abstraction and symbolism. During his time in Nigeria, Sengupta exhibited at the National Museum in Lagos, merging modern abstraction with African cultural motifs.
In the 1990s, Sengupta returned to India, where he became a key figure in the Indian art scene, holding major solo exhibitions at esteemed venues such as the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, the Birla Academy of Art & Culture in Kolkata, and Artworld Sarala’s Centre in Chennai. His works have also been featured in international exhibitions across New York, London, and Tokyo, reflecting his global appeal.
