GEM Hospital Observes Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with Free Screening Initiative for Tamil Nadu Government Pensioners

Chennai, 23rd March 2026: Marking Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, GEM Hospital, India’s premier Gastroenterology and laparoscopic speciality hospital has announced a series of initiatives aimed at promoting early detection and awareness of colorectal cancer. The programme includes a Free Colorectal Screening initiative for Tamil Nadu Government Pensioners, a Felicitation Ceremony honouring Colorectal Cancer Warriors, and an expert-led awareness session for the public.

Colorectal cancer is increasingly becoming a major health concern in India. According to global cancer data (GLOBOCAN 2022), India records around 65,000 new colorectal cancer cases and around 38,000 deaths annually, with a rising incidence linked to urban lifestyles, dietary habits, and ageing populations. Alarmingly, a large proportion of cases in India are diagnosed at advanced stages, significantly impacting survival rates.

Highlighting the objective of the free screening programme, Dr. P. Senthilnathan, Director, GEM Hospital said, “Through this initiative, we aim to make preventive healthcare more accessible to Tamil Nadu Government Pensioners, who may otherwise delay or avoid screening. Early diagnosis not only improves survival rates but also reduces the complexity and cost of treatment. Even simple tests like colonoscopy can detect precancerous polyps and prevent cancer altogether”.

The objective of this awareness session is to educate participants on key risk factors such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and low-fiber diets, along with early warning signs including changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, and persistent abdominal discomfort.

Speaking on the importance of early screening, Dr. Pinak Dasgupta, Chief Colorectal Surgeon, GEM Hospital said, “Colorectal cancer is largely preventable and highly treatable when detected early. However, in India, nearly 60–70% of patients present in advanced stages due to lack of awareness and screening. Regular screening, especially for individuals above 45 years or those with risk factors, can dramatically reduce both incidence and mortality.”

As part of the observance, GEM hospital also hosted a Felicitation Programme recognising Colorectal Cancer Warriors, celebrating survivors and acknowledging their resilience, while reinforcing the importance of early detection and timely treatment.

Dr. C. Palanivelu, Founder & Chairman, GEM Hospitals said, “Colorectal cancer is now the 4th most common cancer in India across both sexes. It is both preventable and treatable when identified early. With advancements in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, we are able to offer patients faster recovery, reduced complications, and better quality of life. However, the key lies in timely diagnosis, which can only be achieved through regular screening and awareness.”

“At GEM Hospital, our approach integrates clinical excellence with compassionate care. Recognising cancer survivors, is not only a tribute to their strength but also a powerful reminder that colorectal cancer can be successfully treated when diagnosed early”, Dr. Palanivelu further added.

Through this initiative, GEM Hospital continues to strengthen its commitment to preventive healthcare and community outreach, while advancing its mission of delivering world-class gastrointestinal and cancer care.
