Health Minister of TN Inaugurates ‘GEM Laparoscopic & Robotic Institute for Hernia and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction’

Chennai, 11th July 2021: Thiru Ma. Subramaniam, Honourable Minister for Health & Family Welfare, today inaugurated ‘GEM Laparoscopic & Robotic Institute for Hernia and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction’ at GEM Hospital Chennai, which is a comprehensive Speciality Centre for Hernia Care.

Thiru Ma. Subramaniam congratulated GEM doctors for opening a speciality care centre for Hernia and constantly striving to excel in providing the best healthcare services, and said, “Hernia is a most common surgical problem affecting all age groups and most commonly the labourers and agriculture workers. Laparoscopic repair reduces recurrence, recovery is faster and helps in early return to routine work which is very important to daily labourers for their day today living.”He appreciated Dr Palanivelu for introducing Laparoscopic Hernia Repair first time in India at Coimbatore and also providing training to other surgeons from around the world.

“I appeal to GEM Hospital to provide guidance & training on new laparoscopic surgical techniques to surgeons in government service. Government of Tamil Nadu will provide Laparoscopic treatment for the public through Comprehensive CM insurance scheme. I also congratulate Dr Palanivelu for writing a book on ‘Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery’ which got published in other foreign languages like Korean, Spanish, Chinese etc”, Thiru Ma. Subramaniam added.

On the occasion, Dr.C.Palanivelu, Founder & Chairman, GEM Hospitals said, “Hernia is a common clinical condition occurring in 27% male and 30-40% female develop incisional Hernia. Due to fear of pain, prolonged recovery time and recurrence of hernia, people do not seek treatment in time and more than 10% of them suffer intestinal obstruction that needs emergency operations. More than 10% among groin and 30-40% among incisional hernia recur again and again, after open hernia repair. Not only cost of treatment increases due to prolonged recovery time but huge economy loss to individual and to the country.
