Veterans India Cricket Foundation (VCI) today announced the inaugural all India over 50s inter-zonal veterans cricket tournament to be held in Chennai from 8th March 2022. Six teams representing the five zones and international Indian will compete for the title in the 40 overs per innings tournament over 7 days at Waheguru, Amir Mahal, and VB Nest grounds.
The tournament has generated a lot of interest with over 100 players taking part, including the number of ex-first class players. All matches will be live-streamed on the internet.
The number of national and international over50s tournaments is growing every year and it is the fastest-growing segment in cricket in the world second only to women’s cricket. Over50s cricket is very well structured in many countries and most cricket-playing nations have established national veterans cricket boards that are actively organizing and promoting cricket in their respective countries. The national championship has been in place in England for the last 35 years and other countries like Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa also have similar tournaments in place including the veterans Ashes.
Our organization, Veterans India Cricket Foundation, is a registered non-profit organization, and we aim to raise awareness and put a structure in place in India where cricketers over the age of 50 can carry on enjoying competitive cricket. We hope that this tournament will kick-start structured over50s cricket in India and help us identify a core group of players that can represent VCI in future tournaments in India and around the world including the 4-nation Marlborough cup in England and the World-cup in South Africa in 2023.
