Kattankulathur | January 2026:

SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), under the aegis of the Tamil Perayam, organised a grand “Mupperum Vizha” (Three-fold Celebration) today. The event brought together the inauguration of the Dr T.R. Paarivendhar Tamil Foundation, the presentation of the World Record certificate achieved in connection with the 150th anniversary of the song Vande Mataram, and the observance of Parakram Diwas, commemorating the valour and sacrifice of national heroes.

The Dr T.R. Paarivendhar Tamil Foundation was inaugurated in the revered names of Thiruvalluvar, Ilango Adigal, Kambar, Ramalinga Adigalar (Vallalar), and Subramania Bharati. On this occasion, Dr T.R. Paarivendhar presented a cheque for ₹10 lakh towards the corpus fund of the Foundation to Dr Karu. Nagarajan, President of Tamil Perayam.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the creation of Vande Mataram, SRMIST achieved a world record with the participation of 3,032 individuals. In recognition of this achievement, the World Record Union awarded the official certificate, which was received on behalf of SRM by Mr K. Annamalai (Ex-IPS) from Ms Sherifa Hanifa, Educator, World Record Union.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Guest Mr K. Annamalai, Ex-IPS, National Executive Committee Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, stated: “A single railway incident in South Africa in 1893 transformed Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi into Mahatma Gandhi. The impact of that transformation culminated, 54 years later, in India attaining independence.”

He also elaborated on the historical significance and inspirational power of Vande Mataram, describing it as a mantra that ignited national consciousness. Speaking further, he remarked: “The history of SRM itself defines its uniqueness. It stands today as a globally recognised university in science and technology, excels in sports, records a high number of patent filings, and, above all, remains an institution that proudly and fearlessly promotes the founder’s mother tongue, Tamil.”

Founder-Chancellor Dr T.R. Paarivendhar, in his address, reflected on the freedom struggle, stating: “We belong to a generation born even before India attained independence. We vividly remember the days when teachers would lead students onto the streets to raise slogans of ‘Quit India’ and chant ‘Jai’ to Mahatma Gandhi. Even as students, we deeply understood the suffering of the nation and the urgency of freedom.”

Dr Karu. Nagarajan, President of Tamil Perayam, noted: “It is a matter of great pride that the World Record Union has recognised SRM’s world record event conducted in honour of the national song Vande Mataram.

Wherever in the world efforts are made to nurture and promote the Tamil language, the Chancellor of SRM will ensure the necessary financial support so that Tamil service continues uninterrupted.”

The event stood as a strong affirmation of Tamil language, Tamil cultural heritage, patriotism, and the social responsibility of the younger generation. Students, faculty members, and representatives from various disciplines participated in large numbers, contributing to the success and solemnity of the occasion.
