CHENNAI :The Tamil Nadu Academy of Sciences was started in the year 1976 by 54 eminent scientists across the state. The “Tamil Nadu Academy of Sciences” was renamed as “The Academy of Sciences Chennai” in the year 2014. The objective of the Academy is to review periodically the state of education, research, development, and application in the various branches of sciences. Academy is keen to organize, or to help organize Seminars, and Conferences at the State, National and International levels at different Institutes in Tamil Nadu.
The following institutions: University of Madras, Anna University, IGCAR Kalpakkamity, Madurai Kamaraj University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, IITM Chennai, CLRI Chennai, Alagappa University, Central. University of Tamil Nadu Thiruvarur, Tamilnadu Veterinary Animal Science University (TANUVAS), Bharathiar University, are members of the Academy. Now Academy has more than 300 fellows and every year electing new fellows to the Academy based on the scientific performance
Every year the Academy awards young scientists and Senior Scientists in different subjects in our state to encourage and promote science in our state. The Young Scientist Award was started in the Year 2014 and Senior Scientist awards and Masila Vijaya Awards from 2018.
The 2025 Academy Award function was held on 18th March 2026. The distinguished chief guest Padmashri Dr. V. Kamakoti, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras honoured the awardees. Dr. Rita John, Registrar, University of Madras, Dr. J. Kumar, former president of the Academy, Dr. V. Masilamani, distinguished member, and Fellows of the Academy also graced the occasion. Dr. S. Sriman Narayanan, presided the function. Dr. A. Stephen, Secretary, welcomed the guests and the gathering concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. D. Ravi Shankaran, Joint-secretary.
